More Than Just Fizz: What Real Soda Actually Looks Like

More Than Just Fizz: What Real Soda Actually Looks Like

Have you ever stopped to wonder: what is soda?

At its most basic, it’s a carbonated beverage, a simple mix of water, sweetener, and flavourings. But at Steep Soda Co, we see it differently. For us, soda is a craft that starts with the produce and ends with a fresh "fizz" that you just won't find in a supermarket aisle.

The History of the "Health Tonic"

The term "soda" originates from the sodium salts (like sodium bicarbonate) used in early recipes to mimic the mineral-rich waters of natural springs.

Invented in the late 18th century, these bubbly concoctions were originally sold in pharmacies as health tonics. They were meant to be restorative, made with real herbs and plants.

Eventually, "soda water" evolved into the soft drinks we see today, named "soft" to distinguish them from "hard" alcoholic spirits. But while the global giants moved toward high-fructose corn syrup and lab-created chemicals, we believe the original spirit of soda was always about natural, refreshing ingredients. We aren't reinventing soda; we’re reclaiming it.

Craft Soda vs. Regular Soda: The Real Difference

Real Fruit vs. Flavourings: Most commercial sodas use "natural flavourings" which are often engineered in a lab to mimic food. At Steep, we don’t do that. We use real fruit juices, pressed by us right here in the UK every single week.

Refined Sweetness: Instead of cheap, high-intensity chemical sweeteners, we use high-quality British cane sugar. It creates a balanced, crisp sweetness that complements the fruit rather than overpowering it.

The Bubbles: This is our secret. Mass market drinks often use "aggressive carbonation", those sharp, stinging bubbles to mask a lack of actual flavour. We use a gentler, more refined carbonation level. It allows the nuances of the fruit to shine through and makes for a much smoother drink.

The "Steep" Philosophy: Small-Batch, Hand-Pressed

The clue is in our name. We believe in the process. While big brands rely on industrial assembly lines and pre-made syrups, our process is entirely hands-on.

We juice the fruit, mix the syrups, and box the cans by hand. This isn't just about being "local"; it’s about quality control. This small-batch philosophy ensures every can of Steep is as fresh as possible. When you drink our seasonal Pineapple Soda or our Lime & Cucumber, you’re tasting fruit that was recently in the press, not a concentrate that’s been sitting in a vat for months.

Our goal is to show you exactly what soda can be when you strip away the chemicals, ignore the corporate marketing, and focus entirely on the craft.

Next time you reach for a Soda, make it a real one.
